Artworks - Lisa Krigel

Lisa KrigelLisa studied ceramics and mixed media sculpture at Pennsylvania State University, USA. Her figurative teapots are an attempt to blur the boundaries of form and function. Based on the female form they raise issues of the voyeur's understanding of object, where blatantly adorned figures with attitude appear hermaphroditic with the placing of a functional spout. Many of these pieces veer towards the sculptural with some of them reaching almost a metre in height. Each figurative teapot is hand built from paperclay using a variety of slab, pinch and coil techniques. The pieces are painted with underglazes and fired to 1130 centigrade. A transparent glaze is then added and sometimes transfers and metallic lustres. Finally, Swarovski rhinestones, various beads and natural and or dyed feathers complete each piece. Each "handbag" is wheel thrown and then decorated and fired using the same method as the figurative teapots.
