Artworks - Claire Davies

Claire DaviesClaire Davies’ deceptively simple flower paintings are developed as intense investigations into the possibilities of colour and depth within the boundaries of the canvas. While working directly on to the picture plane the artist constantly experiments with oil paint, mixing, blending, extending, layering and developing her palette, controlling the media to create paintings that on first inspection seem extremely similar but are in fact combinations of many different formulae of colour created to intentionally obtain a similar appearance. Simple, geometric flower heads prove a constant source of inspiration, not only for their visual accessibility for a wide audience but their form and textures allow her to continue her experiments, what may at first, seem quite flat images actually with more careful inspection, reveal a genuine depth and subtlety. Claire has studied to MA level and she continues to work as a lecturer passing on her enthusiasm for painting and the visual arts to students at West Dean College. Claire has exhibited widely throughout the UK and had a successful exhibition in Sydney, Australia. She recently completed a commission for Addenbrooks Hospital in Cambridge. She lives with her partner on a farm in Hampshire where she has converted the old chicken shed into her studio.
