Artworks - Heidi König
Born and raised in Germany, Heidi had a short career as a Medical Secretary, after which she traveled around Australia and South East Asia.
Keen to pursue a career in Art, she signed up for a foundation course at Waltham Forest College. She then gained a place at Brighton University from where she graduated in 1994 with a first class honours degree in Fine Art Printmaking. From Brighton she progressed to the Slade School of Fine Art to complete a Post Graduate Diploma of Fine Art Printmaking.
Rising quickly to the forefront of contemporary abstract printmaking, Heidi König has established herself as one of the most powerful young artists to graduate from the Slade in recent years. It is Heidi’s strong use of colour and form which marks her out as different, influenced by the works of Frankenthaler, Rothko and Matisse.
Largely inspired by her travels - particularly in the developing world, it is the everyday colours, smells, sights and sounds - so rich in these places - which come through in her images.
“It is difficult to describe, but my images and inspiration are driven purely by feelings and emotions. When I set out to paint I don’t have a conscious view of how I want the paintings to look. The images develop as I paint; taking me back to the places I have visited.”
