Artworks - Lesley Jones
Lesley graduated from Central Saint Martin’s in London in 1996, and has work in the University of the Arts’ collection. She has been selected for national art competitions including the Hunting Prize exhibition in 2003. Her work is shown regularly in group and solo shows in the UK.
Her painting technique was developed originally through creating minimalist abstract works in oil on canvas which necessitated preparing top quality, smoothly primed canvasses onto which oil paint was carefully blended. Over the past four years she has combined that technique with spontaneous gestural marks with the palette knife to create landscape paintings full of atmosphere.
Travelling with camera and sketchbook through the wilder landscapes of Britain has provided the raw material for this new collection. Lesley has worked intensively and intuitively on each piece, brushing and sculpting the paint over the whole surface whilst it is wet to create the right sense of place, an amalgamation of visual references, memory, mood and atmosphere. In all of these pieces, with a true English sensitivity she has allowed the weather to be the prime subject. Her strongest influence among many from the long tradition of northern romantic landscape painters is Turner.
