Press and News - From the Cornish coast to Grayshott
4th October 2009
GalleryOne in Grayshott will be hosting the first solo exhibition in Surrey, of work by the artist Alison Orchard. This provides a unique opportunity to view and purchase paintings from her latest collection which takes inspiration from the dramatic Cornish coast.
Having spent much of her childhood visiting the Cornish countryside, Alison continues to sketch and paint in Cornwall, extending her ideas onto canvas, from her studio in Beacon Hill, Surrey. GalleryOne are known for supporting and nurturing local talent and are pleased to be involved with this debut solo exhibition. Marian Orchard-Webb, owner of GalleryOne commented, “These seascapes are glorious and evocative; for anyone who has a nostalgia for the Cornish Coast, they are impossible to resist”
This new collection of dramatic Cornish paintings explores the atmospheric relationship between land and sea, light and air. The vibrancy of this vital changing landscape provides rich material for Alison’s exploration of colour and paint. Her responsive mark-making dances across the canvas, where the image evolves from palette knife, brushstrokes and collage.
From an early age Alison has embraced her enthusiasm for Fine art, with frequent visits to The St. Ives School of Art, taking her formal art training at Epsom School of Art & Design and Harrow College (B.A. hons). It was on her first visit to St. Ives School of Art in Cornwall, as a teenager, that she first met artist’s Roy Ray and Bryan Pearce and discovered the joy of sketching and painting ‘en plein air’ surrounded by the changing Cornish landscape.
Alison has consistently painted and practiced life drawing, running her own Life drawing workshops with other artists. Her recent work has enabled her to fully extend her skills and reach a greater level of maturity. This exhibition signifies a new confidence and focus in Alison Orchard’s career as an emerging contemporary fine artist.
The ‘Arvor’ exhibition runs until 7 November 2009, is free to visit and all work is available for sale.
